---Facilitated by Chinese Ministry
of Water Resources (MWR), our delegation visited South
African Department of Water Affairs (DWA) in the administrative
capital of Pretoria on April 11. The delegates were warmly
welcomed by Mr. Moloko Matlala, Director of Water Resource
Information, Ms. Shane Naidoo, Director of Water Resource
Classification and Ms. Benita Young, Deputy Director of
International Relations and the sincere and cordial talks
were held between the two sides.
Director of HRC Ms. Cheng Xialei briefed
the South African Department of Water Affairs about the
mission of this visit and HRC's development and conveyed
the invitation from Chinese Ministry of Water Resources
to South African Department of Water Affairs to participate
in the small hydropower training. Mr. Moloko spoke highly
of HRC's SHP technology and the achievements it had made
in this domain. He pointed out that South Africa was not
rich in water resources and the country was currently
focusing on exploiting underground water to meet the demand
and small hydropower which integrated water supply and
power generation could not only provide important guarantee
for developing rural economy in South Africa, but also
serve as a practical technology to cope with climate change.
In the third session of China-South Africa Water Resources
Committee convened previously, small hydropower was designated
as one of the major subjects for bilateral cooperation
in the next stage. DWA also put forward its earnest hope
that its members would be able to participate in the HRC's
SHP Training Workshop for English speaking countries in
Africa in this October and this will be the first item
for China-South Africa cooperation in the next stage.
Ms. Cheng extended her warm welcome for DWA members to
come to HRC for exchanging SHP technology and expressed
her sincere wish to maintain close contact with DWA and
to provide technological support to South Africa for its
SHP development.
After the meeting, Ms. Cheng paid a
visit to Counsellor Rong Yansong in the Economic and Commercial
Counsellor's Office of the Embassy of the People's Republic
of China in South Africa during which she conveyed the
aspiration of South African Department of Water Affairs
to participate in the China's foreign-aid trainings held
by HRC and reported the progress of HRC's cooperation
and exchange with related scientific research organizations,
which was highly appreciated by the counselor and won
his full support.
